Amandola

Amandola lies in the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park. Its name is linked to the ancient statio “ad mandulam”, meaning “near the almond tree”. Located along the Salaria Gallica, for centuries it was a place of passage for people and goods, as well as a crossroads for economic development routes.

Today it has 3,303 inhabitants, according to 2021 data, but in the past its population reached as many as 14,000. Amandola was granted the title of city because of its strategic importance, both economically and commercially, and consequently also artistically.

Founding myth

Amandola traces its origins back to a nostos, a tale about the return of Greek heroes from the Trojan War. Demophon, leaving for war, abandoned Phyllis, who waited for him in vain for many years. In despair, she set out towards the Adriatic shores and landed in the lands of the Apennine Sibyl.

Discouraged by the prophecies she received, Phyllis moved the gods to pity, and they transformed her into an almond tree. When Demophon finally returned home and did not find her, he followed her trail.

When he found her, he embraced the almond tree, which immediately blossomed. According to this legend, the name Amandola was born from a poignant love story.

The legend of Amandola

A digital artwork created in 2023 by Emanuele Deangelis, an artist and comic-book illustrator from Amandola. The work is permanently displayed in Amandola’s open-air gallery, in Via Cesare Battisti.

Curiosity

Anyone who has ever wondered why the Marche region is home to such an important footwear district can find part of the answer on the portal of the Church of Sant’Agostino.

Over the centuries, the arts of wool production and leatherworking brought considerable wealth to Amandola. This prosperity was such that, in 1468, a merchant named Johannes de Vannis commissioned the Venetian artist Marino Cedrino to create a portal on which the symbols of the shoemakers’ guild, to which he belonged, were carved.

For art lovers

The museum collection now preserves precious parchments dating back to the year 1000, works of art recovered after the earthquake and kept locally, and a valuable 13th-century wooden Christ, which bears witness to the high level of craftsmanship achieved in woodcarving.

One exceptional feature is the opportunity to watch restoration work take place in the adjoining Restoration Centre, where visitors can observe restorers at work behind open doors.

For lovers of active life

There are many trails, routes and long-distance paths: the Franciscan Way of the Marche, the Tenna Horse Trail, the Capuchin Way, and the Romantic Road of the Sibillini Mountains.

Traditional and characteristic festivals

In August, the Procession of the Canestrelle takes place: the offering of wheat to the city’s patron saint, Blessed Antonio.

Typical products

Fine white and black truffle

Amandola is a land of fine white truffle, a true sentinel of biodiversity and a sign of an uncontaminated environment.

The white truffle, the fine black truffle and the summer truffle are local excellences celebrated in March, July and November with the event “Diamanti a tavola” — “Diamonds at the Table” — a delicious occasion not to be missed.

Typical dish: fregnacce, a traditional woodcutter’s dish. It is a kind of freshly prepared cannellone without filling, served in three different ways: with cheese and pepper, with sauce, or with truffle.

Lake San Ruffino

An enchanting sheet of water at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains, Lake San Ruffino is both a starting point and an arrival point for routes on foot and on horseback. It is also a place where visitors can stop, contemplate the landscape, or spend time together.

Every year in April, the lake comes alive with numerous sails taking part in “Le Vele di San Ruffino”, a sporting event that attracts both enthusiasts and curious visitors.

Located within the Monti Sibillini National Park, Amandola is a key hub for outdoor activities, from trekking and cycling to sport fishing.

In the upper part of Amandola, surrounded by the noble palaces of the town’s historic families, stands Teatro La Fenice. Imagine a classic theatre, with decorated boxes, frescoed ceilings, a red velvet curtain, and a rich decoration of stucco and papier-mâché — which, for those who may not know, is ideal for improving acoustics. Majestic, yes, but not exactly large. What is truly surprising is its size: it is very small, an authentic gem, with fewer than 100 seats, making it extremely intimate and charming. It was originally created as a condominium theatre, meaning that it was built by the noble families of Amandola so they could enjoy theatrical performances. Every year, the theatre boxes were assigned by drawing lots, so that the best seats would not remain the exclusive privilege of a single family.

Before you, an extraordinary viewpoint opens up, allowing your gaze to wander across the gentle hills of Amandola and reach the majestic Sibillini Mountains rising in the distance. After this moment of wonder, look around you: you are standing in the ancient centre of Amandola’s social and political life. Still surrounded by its mighty walls, Piazza Umberto I is home to the Torre del Podestà and the Cassero Maggiore. These are the last remains of a much larger structure and stand as evidence of the town’s once imposing military power.

The Church of Sant’Agostino, also known as the Sanctuary of Blessed Antonio, dates back to the 14th century. It underwent many alterations over time, until 1782, when the architect Pietro Maggi gave it its current appearance. Before walking down the staircase from Piazza Risorgimento, the first thing that catches the eye is the church’s Baroque façade. Approach it with curiosity and take time to “read” the wonderful 15th-century Venetian-style portal, signed by Marino Cedrino. No, you are not mistaken: what you see really is a shoe, along with the tools of a stonecutter. These are “speaking” testimonies of Amandola’s rich past, when many skilled workers were dedicated to the production of fabrics and leather goods. Inside, allow yourself to be surprised by the church’s neoclassical charm, by its stuccoes and by its painted cycles, especially those in the lunettes, which tell the story of Blessed Antonio. Going down to the right, into the chapel beneath the ancient cloister, a display case preserves the intact remains of Blessed Antonio, whom the city celebrates every year with its patronal festival at the end of August.

MU6 – Landscape Museum

Have you ever watched the restoration of a work of art? No? In Amandola, you can experience the emotion of observing the meticulous and expert work carried out by restorers as they bring a work of art back to its original splendour. The MU6 museums of Amandola are housed in the rooms of the former Church of the Collegiata. In addition to guiding you through the discovery of different environments and the flora and fauna that inhabit them, they will take you on a journey through legends, history, popular culture, and artistic masterpieces created by both local and national craftsmen. On the ground floor, discover the Landscape Museum, with a model of the Sibillini reliefs that is well worth studying. On the first floor, you will find the future Museum of the Truffle and the town’s rich and precious historical archive. On the third floor, discover the Restoration Centre, the Amandola Picture Gallery, and the Museum of the Parchments from the Year 1000.

Abbey of Saints

Discover Built in the mid-11th century on the remains of an older crypt, the Abbey of Saints Ruffino and Vitale is now visually dominated by its massive bell tower, softened by elegant mullioned windows. Inside, divided into three naves, take time to pause in front of the two fine 15th-century frescoes. But to discover the most distinctive features of this church, you need to go down. First, descend into the Romanesque crypt, which preserves the relics of Saint Ruffino. Beneath them, you will notice a hole. If you suffer from a hernia, this may be the place for you: according to tradition, if you crawl through the hole three times while invoking the saint’s protection, you will be healed. Trying costs nothing. Do you think the visit ends here? Not at all. This church will surprise you again, because by continuing downward you will find yourself in an even older crypt, with five naves carved into the sandstone and covered with dry-wall paintings. Its origins are uncertain. It was probably used for pagan rites before later being adopted by the first Christians, who decorated it with the paintings that can still be admired today. If you happen to visit on 18 and 19 August, you will find the oldest fair in the Sibillini Mountains, held here every year with stands, music, traditional songs and dances. You will even have the chance to try dancing the saltarello yourself.

Procession of the Canestrelle

On the penultimate Sunday of August, the City of Amandola comes alive with games and entertainment, music, songs and dancing.

Come and discover ancient crafts and taste typical local products, but above all bring your curiosity with you and take part in the “Procession of the Canestrelle”, held in honour of Blessed Antonio, the town’s patron saint.

Since the Middle Ages, men and women dressed in traditional clothing have offered the fruits of agriculture to the patron saint as a sign of gratitude for a good harvest.

Will you join the men in carrying sheaves of wheat, and the women who gracefully carry baskets full of produce balanced on their heads?

“Diamanti a tavola”- “Diamonds at the Table”

In Amandola, look for diamonds on the table, not in a jewellery shop.

This gastronomic festival includes events, stands and a market exhibition of typical products, with the Fine White Truffle of Amandola as the undisputed protagonist.

Its fragrance is unmistakable and impossible to describe fully, representing the forbidden dream of gourmets.

Its characteristic notes combine, in a surprising and highly original balance, the floral aroma of honey, the pungent scent of garlic, and that intense, wild woodland fragrance typical of mushrooms. Together, they evoke images of rain-soaked earth, scattered with dewy leaves and needles of Scots pine.
